Investor Relations Website Best Practices for Small Caps

Yesterday Catherine Crofton delivered our first webinar regarding removing the 5 barriers to an effective investor relations website. I come from a web development and media background so I was a bit green to all this IR stuff when I started at Q4 a couple of years ago. Needless to say I’ve been schooled the hard way and have learned internally and from our customers what issuers need to say to their investors.

One of the questions that stood out to me from yesterday’s webinar was when an attendee asked if we had any samples to show how small cap companies are leveraging the IR website best practices Catherine was speaking about. Catherine had shown great examples from some larger companies, namely, Nexen and Potash and explained how they have done a great job of conveying their messaging as well as making it easy for their audience to find information quickly.

Although I can’t share some of the examples from the projects we haven’t launched yet, I can say that part of our project process at Q4 is to help clients realize these best practices through using our modules which have been designed with IR best practices in mind. Throughout our implementation process, we work with our clients to help them improve their IR websites and apply best practices to their site. In the past we have primarily focused on migrating our client’s websites to our platform when they join the family and applying these best practices is now an additional service included with our implementation process.

Since our Spring 09 release, we’ve added Full-Text RSS feeds for news, presentations and events, Share This social sharing which allows any page to be shared through all the social networks, Investor Briefcase, Page-specific meta data and host of of other improvements to our IR website product – that all our clients receive automatically!

Of course we’ve always had email alerts, stock quotes, press release feeds and all the basic IR required items but we’re taking a different approach and simply using these best practices to not only make the IR section better, but to make the overall website better.

Look for a follow-up in a week or so when we launch some before-and-after shots of what we’ve done for a couple of new clients that are in development.

Q4Web – Google maps

Following up on our Q4 WEB Spring 08 Features blog post, I’m going to talk about Q4 Web’s ability to embed Google maps into your site. Google maps are quickly becoming a standard method for displaying maps on websites.

What is Google Maps?
Google Maps is a Google service offering powerful, user-friendly mapping technology and local business information—including business locations, contact information, and driving directions. You can find out more about Google maps here

Ok, great. So what can I do with Google maps
Googles maps are quickly becoming a standard method for displaying various types of map related information on company websites. Some examples of how Google maps can be useful on your site are:

Display a map to your corporate offices
Show a map of your operations (see a great example on the Baffinland Iron Mines website)

In addition to the basic mapping data, administrators can also tag locations with additional information regarding the location that is tagged on the map. Website users can view satellite images of your mine areas as well as topographical images providing them more insight into your companies operations.

Common Sense 101: Migrating CMS Content

I read a great article on CMS Watch today that talked about migrating website content for a client when migrating to a new CMS system.

The author speaks about the inevitable awkward moment of the implementation process when someone pipes up and says “uh, what about the content?”

As part of our implementation service, we specifically bring this up with clients during the project’s kickoff. We make it very clear that we will handle all the content migration and we also use the migration as an opportunity to train the client using some real-world examples. The training happens on-site and right before our pre-production launch activities so the timing is perfect and the client is ready to use the tool by the time they go live.

We’ve always taken the approach that we’re not only selling a product, but we’re selling a service and do everything we can to make the migration to our platform as simple and seamless as possible to the client.

In addition to Q4 WEB providing accurate website records for Bill 198 compliance to reduce your risk surrounding corporate disclosure we also do all the little things that set our company apart from the sea of CMS companies out there.
