CICA 2008 Corporate Reporting Awards – Winners

CICA logoAs a panel judge in the electronic disclosure category, I attended the CICA corporate reporting awards earlier today at the swank Carlu in College Park. The usual suspects were all in attendance – it’s beginning to feel like “going home” with all the familiar faces. Many of this year’s winners were predictable – a select group of companies whom consistently excel in corporate reporting and take these awards very seriously.

In the electronic category it was great to see so many companies having improved over last year and honourable mention Petro Canada, was definitely one of them. What I find interesting is how many companies submit for the electronic disclosure category, knowing full well that they won’t win or even score highly. What this tells me is that the feedback from the panel judges is highly valued and perhaps a contributing factor in some of the improvements we see.

  • Small Crown winner — Royal Canadian Mint

Industry winners:

  • Communications & Media – TELUS Corporation
  • Diversified Industries -Bombardier Inc.
  • Diversified Industries – Consumer Products – Canadian Tire Corporation, Limited
  • Diversified Industries – Industrials & Energy – SNCLavalin Group Inc.
  • Financial Services – Royal Bank of Canada
  • Forest Products – Catalyst Paper Corporation
  • Life Sciences/Technology – MDS Inc.
  • Mining – PotashCorp
  • Oil & Gas – Nexen Inc.
  • Real Estate – Brookfield Properties Corporation
  • Utilities & Pipelines – TransAlta Corporation

These industry winners received the highest average rankings in the four judging categories: financial reporting, corporate governance disclosure, sustainable development reporting and electronic disclosure.

An Award of Excellence was selected in each of the four judging categories and an Honourable Mention was given for corporate governance disclosure, sustainable development reporting and electronic disclosure.

The judging category winners are:

  • Award of Excellence for Financial Reporting – TELUS Corporation
  • Award of Excellence for Electronic Disclosure – PotashCorp
  • Honourable Mention for Excellence in Electronic Disclosure – Petro-Canada
  • Award of Excellence for Corporate Governance Disclosure – Nexen Inc.
  • Honourable Mention for Excellence in Corporate Governance Disclosure – TELUS Corporation
  • Award of Excellence for Sustainable Development Reporting — PotashCorp
  • Honourable Mention for Excellence in Sustainable Development Reporting – TELUS Corporation

The Overall Award of Excellence for Corporate Reporting was presented to the most outstanding industry winner in 2008 – TELUS Corporation.
